2023-01-20 Environmental resource science experiment I (applied physics) "Synthesis of adhesives, production of wood materials, and evaluation of physical properties"

Wang introduces the "Environmental Resources Science Experiment I (Applied Physics)" class for second-year students in Department of Environmental and Natural Resource Sciences Faculty of Agriculture.
In this class, students will conduct experiments on three themes: "Synthesis of adhesives and production of wood materials, and evaluation of their physical properties," "Papermaking and evaluation of paper's physical properties," and "Mechanical processing of wood and safety education, wood drying, and environmental measurements."

Since I was shown all the themes, I will introduce them one by one.

Today's presentation will be given by Associate Professor, who will talk about "Synthesis of adhesives, production of wood-based materials, and evaluation of their physical properties."
They synthesize an adhesive that hardens when heated, create "particle board," and evaluate its performance.
Particle board, made by solidifying finely crushed wood or chips, is used as a building material and furniture.
It's an eco-friendly material because it can be reused and made from waste materials.

The first and second photos show how the adhesive is combined.
One handles everything from assembling experimental equipment to synthesizing and measuring the properties of the finished adhesive.

In the next class, Wang uses the glue he made to make particle board.
The third photo is the chip that will be used as the material.

One that mixes the glue made by the students while spraying it.
That's the fourth photo.
I'm looking forward to seeing what kind of board it will be.

Once the chips and adhesive are mixed, spread it in the mold so that it has an even thickness as shown in the 5th photo.

Squeeze it tightly as shown in the 6th photo.

The 7th and 8th photos are the ones with the mold removed.

The finished product is about the size and thickness of okonomiyaki.

If you apply heat of 150 degrees and 5.6 tons of pressure to this, it becomes a single board.
The 9th photo is the machine for applying pressure.
The student measures the time and gradually lowers the pressure on the bowl.

The 10th photo is the completed particle board!
The freshly made items are the same as the others.
The thickness has become much thinner than before, and it has become a solid and hard board.
After this, the students conducted a strength test to investigate the properties of the particle board.

Next week, we'll be introducing paper experiments!
