2024-12-19 Regional Ecosystem Studies Training II "Satoyama Management Fieldwork Training" ①

In the first-year class of Department of Ecoregion Science Faculty of Agriculture, "Fieldwork Training in Satoyama Management," I went to Noyamakita and Rokudoyama Parks in the Sayama Hills with Professor Hiroto Toda and students. I learned a lot about Satoyama management and the natural environment!

In the morning, we gathered in front of the Satoyama folk house in the park. We were blessed with good weather and were in great spirits!

This Satoyama house is a newly built and restored Edo-period house that actually existed around the Sayama Hills, and it even has a hearth inside. It was cold outside, but it was warm and happy to be around the hearth.
Smoking the thatched roof over the hearth also helps to prevent insects and decay.

First, I had the opportunity to participate in a volunteer activity cutting undergrowth in the Satoyama area.
The third photo shows veteran volunteers giving a briefing on safety management, etc. After this, they started weeding the grass!

The dog carefully cuts the bamboo grass at his feet with a sickle.
If you cut the bamboo grass, the forest floor will become brighter, and plants such as golden orchid, dogtooth violets, and tulips will start to bloom in the spring!

The fifth photo shows a satoyama where old trees were cut down a few years ago. Young oaks and red pines are growing. Steady efforts are revitalizing the satoyama!!
Hakken and Koken is cheering you on from the trees!

The bright red viburnum berries in the sixth photo are so pretty!
With the undergrowth cleared, the forest floor is now clear and beautiful!

After finishing work, I always take good care of the tools I used. I sharpen the sickles with a whetstone and spray them with anti-rust spray.

Everyone is working up a good sweat and has big smiles on their faces!

In the afternoon, Wang took a walk around the park while listening to an outdoor explanation about the natural environment from his senior graduate students.
The rest will be introduced next week.
