Message from the Dean

Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology Graduate School of Engineering (Master's courses) was established for the first time in 1966, and was reorganized into the Graduate School of Engineering (Master's and Doctoral courses) in 1989 with the establishment of a new doctoral courses. Since then, we have been sending out "human resources who have acquired knowledge of cutting-edge research and technological development in their own specialized fields, who are responsible for highly original research in their specialized fields, and who can continuously solve problems and conduct research and development."

The mission of our Graduate School of Engineering is to "create new knowledge that will change the world." In order to create new knowledge that will change the world, independent research by original researchers is important. Furthermore, through education by highly original Faculty Member, we aim to produce graduates who are able to "create new knowledge that will change the world." We aim to nurture graduates who are equipped with basic knowledge and ethics in the natural sciences, who have acquired knowledge that can be used in cutting-edge research and technological development, who have the ability to define and solve problems, and who have the ability to communicate with others.

With the reorganization of Graduate School of Engineering, starting from this year, 2023, we have reorganized the six departments of Faculty of Engineering into six master's and doctoral programs in order to directly connect to education and research in advanced specialized fields. We also have a Specialist degree program in Department of Industrial Technology and Innovation, which trains human resources who can immediately contribute to industrial technology development, and Joint Doctoral Program for Sustainability Research, which was established jointly by Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, the University of Electro-Communications, and our university, to train doctoral candidates in a collaborative arts and science field. We have created a system that enables collaboration across fields in order to train human resources who have not only advanced specialized skills but also a broad interdisciplinary perspective.

Outline of Graduate School of Engineering

Graduate School of Engineering (Master's, Doctoral, Doctoral (3-year) and Specialist Degree Programs) accepts students from Japan and around the world who aim to become engineers and researchers who can play an active role in society, based on world-leading research results in fields such as life, information, nanotechnology and materials, which are key policy fields in Japan. We provide an excellent research environment with faculty member who boast original and cutting-edge research and cutting-edge research facilities, and as a result, we have trained 1,288 doctoral students, 11,892 master's students and 655 master's in technology management to date.

In April 2019, Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, the University of Electro-Communications, and our university jointly established the Graduate Joint Doctoral Program for Sustainability Research, a doctoral program (three years) with the aim of "cultivating collaborative human resources between the arts and sciences" who can immediately contribute to the international community. In April 2023, the program was reorganized into six master's and doctoral programs based on the six departments of Faculty of Engineering of Engineering, with the aim of directly connecting students to education and research in advanced specialized fields: Department of Biotechnology and Life Science, Department of Biomedical Engineering, Department of Applied Chemistry, Department of Applied Physics and Chemical Engineering, Department of Mechanical Systems Engineering, and Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. "Developing intellectual professional talent in engineering through Zelkova-style education - nurturing the trunk of expertise and expanding the branches of diversity" - the curriculum is comprised of three subject groups (interdisciplinary package subjects "Medicine and Drug Discovery," "Energy, Environment, and Materials," and "Robotics and AI," general intellectual subjects, and practical engineering subjects) to nurture "talented talent that will continue to take on the challenges of sustainable development and problem solving in today's increasingly complex and diverse society."

The doctoral program accepts not only those who have completed the master's program and those who have completed the Specialist degree program, but also working adults who are still employed at companies and research institutes, making it a graduate school that is widely open to the industrial world. Graduates are highly regarded by their employers, and the program provides extremely detailed employment support for each major, so the job offer ratio and employment rate remain at a consistently high level. In addition, many of our doctoral program graduates are active in educational and research institutions such as universities, and in the research and development departments of companies.

The university is always ranked among the top universities in Japan for its joint research with industry, and has contributed greatly to the creation of new technologies and industries by transferring research results to industry and starting up ventures. The university is also actively working on internationalization, with each major offering an "international major" that can be completed in English alone, and has signed academic exchange agreements with top universities in Europe, the United States, and Asia, accepting many graduate students and providing many graduate students from the university with the opportunity to study abroad for research. During their time at the university, students have published their research results in academically highly regarded international journals and presented cutting-edge results at international conferences, winning various awards. In addition to introducing students to various scholarship opportunities, the university has established its own research grant system, created an environment where students can concentrate on their studies and research, and built a system that allows for collaboration across fields in order to cultivate human resources who have not only high-level specialized skills but also a broad interdisciplinary perspective.

Message from the Chair of  Department of Biotechnology and Life Science

Bioengineering is an academic field that seeks to understand the mechanisms of life phenomena and apply them to create things that are useful for our daily lives. Specifically, students learn the fundamentals of research and development for pharmaceuticals, functional foods, materials and devices used in medical treatment and diagnosis, bioenergy, and more. They also learn analytical techniques and informatics that support the creation of such things. Bioengineering can be said to be an academic field that encompasses a wide range of topics, from the fundamentals of life science to applications aimed at social implementation.

As the first Department of Biotechnology and Life Science in Japan, our department has created a curriculum to develop biotechnology experts ahead of other universities nationwide, and has sent many excellent human resources out into society. Each laboratory in our department utilizes cutting-edge equipment and technology to carry out world-first research and development, pioneer new research fields, and conduct collaborative research with companies aimed at social implementation. We have also established a system in which students studying in our department can engage in practical research based on chemistry, life science, engineering, etc., with an awareness of future contributions to society.

This department aims to develop a deep and broad understanding of the specialized knowledge of "chemical engineering" and "physical engineering" in an integrated manner, and to utilize this knowledge in cutting-edge research on energy, the environment, new materials, and related equipment development, system development, operation and control, and advanced measurement and analysis methods. Through research activities and graduate school lectures, students will acquire the ability to consider and judge modern and future problems from multiple perspectives, to discover and solve issues that need to be addressed, and the creativity that accompanies such activities, which will be necessary in a future VUCA (volatility, uncertainty, complexity, ambiguity) society. We will also cultivate experts who can utilize these abilities to play a leading role in companies and social activities, and researchers and engineers who can contribute to the formation of a sustainable society and play an active role in society and internationally.

Message from the Chair Department of Mechanical Systems Engineering

We live in a society that cannot exist without machines. In order to maintain a good global environment, achieve well-being, and even advance into space, machines that are in harmony with nature and humans are increasingly required. This major focuses on smart mobility, digital manufacturing, and robotics/nanomechanics, and attracts people who aim to become engineers and researchers who can pave the way for a bright future and play an active role on a global scale.

The approximately 30 laboratories that make up this department have achieved world-first results in their respective fields. Another feature of this department is that it allows students to engage in research activities at partner institutions such as the Railway Technical Research Institute, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, and the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology. In addition, the department actively engages in collaborative research with companies, making it possible to tackle research topics with a strong awareness of social implementation. The doctoral program is designed to enable students to work on research in parallel with their work, and approximately half of the students are in this position.

Doctoral Program

Graduate School of Engineering The Doctoral Program consists of five majors: Department of Biotechnology and Life Science, Department of Applied Chemistry, Department of Mechanical Systems Engineering, Department of Electronic and Information Engineering, and Joint Doctoral Program for Sustainability Research, all of which correspond to specialized fields that support today's advanced science and technology.

  1. In order to respond to the educational and research fields of academic fields, education and research are conducted under a strong guidance system based on the universal system of academic studies. For doctoral dissertation research guidance, we have a multiple guidance system so that we can also handle interdisciplinary research.
  2. In order to eliminate the drawbacks of conventional education and research that is highly specialized but very narrow, students will conduct literature research on a research topic different from that of their doctoral thesis, thereby acquiring a wide range of knowledge and cultivating flexible thinking skills.
  3. In classes, each Faculty Member will Professor mainly about the field in which they are actually conducting research.
